Ambiguous Space

Educated by the hard knocks of life, school, work and community, Tom Lewis has battled, pleaded, snuck up on it, lay hidden behind it with indifference, an earnestly persisted pursuit, even gave up on art; yet somehow the obsession to create beautiful frivolous creations out of nothing drives him year after year from 1965.

Largely selftaught or figured it out on his own muse of invention, sometimes with the help of a course or two and a lot of intense observation, Tom took paper and pencil and paint and crayon and linoleum and roller and inks, the photographic process and computers to print, draw or paint images, forms or objects all explored, meditated and visualized from the heart and mind in wonder.

Tom’s journey through the imagination all started as a child with a pencil and piece of paper. Look where it has taken him to now. to now.

Capturing light and recording it into many different configurations; molecular chemical reactions on media of some sort or digital computer algorithms.

Scribbling a line on a wall with a burnt stick for the first time was where magic began for a human. Another line, circle, square drawn by another human is where magic continues.

Smearing brown mud, ochre and red clay on a rock face forces a magic of the heart in the first human visual play.
